Week 26 – Master Key 2016: Think and Grow Rich

Leader-John MaxwellOur Master Key Mastermind Alliance (MKMMA) course has been amazing.  As we wrap up this year’s course, I am taking inspiration from some words from leadership guru John Maxwell:

Time management is an oxymoron. Time is beyond our control, and the clock keeps ticking regardless of how we lead our lives. Priority management is the answer to maximizing the time we have.

And also:

People may hear your words, but they feel your attitude.

These days I always ask myself, “What would the person I intend to become do next?”

I am elated to be a Servant Leader who knows, goes and shows the way, and because of this I am very wealthy for life.

I have come so far already.  Today I begin a new life.  It is definitely time to ‘Think and Grow Rich’.

Week 25 – Master Key 2016: World Down Syndrome Day 2016

WDSDWe are observing World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) on March 21st. This year the theme “My Friends, My Community – The Benefits of Inclusive Environments for Today’s Children and Tomorrow’s Adults” focuses on the acceptance and inclusion of individuals living with Down Syndrome into our societies and communities, and ensuring that they take active part in the various aspects of our society.  It is a great opportunity to do random acts of kindness, as we have worked on in this MKMMA course.  There are many WDSD activities such as:

School and College Awareness Campaign

Various schools will be conducting a Down Syndrome awareness campaign consisting of a speech on Down Syndrome which will be read out during the morning assembly in order to help students better understand Down Syndrome.

Down Syndrome Day Picnic

On March 21st, picnics are behind held to celebrate and observe the day so that people living with Down Syndrome along with their families can open up and mingle with other people.

Rock Your Socks Campaign

We will be doing the rock your socks photo campaign through the help of social media.   We have asked people to show their support in their own little way by clicking a picture of themselves wearing a pair of different colored socks with a hashtag #WorldDownSyndromeDay2016 or  #InSupportOfDownSyndromeAwarenessDay.

WDSD-SocksThe reason for the different colored socks is to prove that though they are different, the socks serve the same purpose.  And just like the socks, though people are different, we all deserve to be treated equally with love, respect and dignity.   In other words, wear something like the mismatching socks that people will ask you about, so you can tell them about WDSD.

My daughter has a diagnosis of Down syndrome.   She is wonderful and she is a big inspiration for almost everything I do.

Week 24 – Master Key 2016: Should You Trust Your Feelings?

blog-Og-Mandino-bookToday I will be master of my emotions.  It is one of nature’s tricks, little understood, that each day I awaken with moods that have changed from yesterday. Yesterday’s joy will become today’s sadness; yet today’s sadness will grow into tomorrow’s joy. Inside me is a wheel, constantly turning from sadness to joy, from exultation to depression, from happiness to melancholy. Like the flowers, today’s full bloom of joy will fade and wither into despondency, yet I will remember that as today’s dead flower carries the seed of tomorrow’s bloom so, too, does today’s sadness carry the seed of tomorrow’s joy.

The words above are from Scroll VI in Og Mandino’s The Greatest Salesman in the World.  My takeaway from this Scroll is that we can’t trust our “feelings” – when it comes to taking action on the tasks to accomplish our goals.

Let’s say you are committed to making $100K per year in your business.  To achieve that, you decide that you need to actually talk to 20 potential customers or business partners each week, or roughly four per day.  Assume that you have to, on average, make 10 “dials” (not everyone is going to answer the phone) to reach the four people per day.  Some days you are tired, so you may not “feel” like making the 10 “dials”.  Some days you are busy, so you may not “feel” like making the 10 “dials”.  Some days you are sad, so you may not “feel” like making the 10 “dials”.  Some days you are fearful, so you may not “feel” like making the 10 “dials”.

It doesn’t matter how you “feel”.  What matters is what you are committed to achieving!

In fact, if you let your ACTIONS lead your feelings, you will get the task done, and then you will “feel” better in the end.

Today I will be master of my emotions.  And how will I master these emotions so that each day will be productive?  For unless my mood is right the day will be a failure. Trees and plants depend on the weather to flourish but I make my own weather, yea I transport it with me. If I bring rain and gloom and darkness and pessimism to my customers then they will react with rain and gloom and darkness and pessimism and they will purchase naught. If I bring joy and enthusiasm and brightness and laughter to my customers they will react with joy and enthusiasm and brightness and laughter and my weather will produce a harvest of sales and a granary of gold for me.

And how will I master my emotions so that every day is a happy day, and a productive one? I will learn this secret of the ages: Weak is he who permits his thoughts to control his actions; strong is he who forces his actions to control his thoughts. Each day, when I awake, I will follow this plan of battle before I am captured by the forces of sadness, self-pity and failure.   If I feel depressed, I will sing.  If I feel sad, I will laugh.  If I feel ill, I will double my labor.   If I feel fear, I will plunge ahead.   If I feel uncertain, I will raise my voice.  If I feel insignificant, I will remember my goals.

Strong is he who forces his actions to control his thoughts.  Knowing these things, we now have a choice.

From this moment I am prepared to control whatever personality awakes in me each day. I will master my moods through positive action and when I master my moods, I will control my destiny.  Today I control my destiny, and my destiny is to become the greatest salesman in the world!  I will become master of myself. I will become great.
